ART WORK BY GIJSBERT WITKAMP IN 2012
It was hard, after years of consultancy work that was mostly verbal and intellectual, to re-build a routine of picture making. The turning point was an invitation to participate in an exhibition organised by Peter Gustavus, at the occasion of the opening of his home gallery at Shazula Cultural Forum. I had to go back to art work. An other fortuitous factor was the gift a a box of professional colour pencils by my mother and sister Riet. I already had a fine supply of paper and other art materials. The studio I had built in 1987-8.
These more or less geometric designs made at the occasion of the opening of the Shazula Home Gallery marked my return to imagery production. In this series the question to the observer is to find a relation be tween the elements of each of the three designs. It is, in a way, a formal exercise in imagery formation - yet also here the element of the undefined, the random, the evocative creeps in.....
