ART WORK BY GIJSBERT WITKAMP
Sketch in oil paint by my father of me.
1963 or 1964.
When I turned twelve years of age my father, a good amateur artist, gave me an oil painting set. One thing oil paint does above any other medium is entice you by its smell. It lead me into the virtual world of pictorial sensation that since always stayed with me.
At age twenty five I had developed two styles that moulded my work till the present. One style was to work in more or less monochrome, clearly bounded planes. The other style was suggestive, working in patterns and textures that suggested shapes and forms that eyes, senses and mind put together in their own interpretative way - leaving it to the observer to create the mental image rather than unambiguously spelling out loud what the observer had to see.
There has always been a bit of a mix between these two contrary and complimentary manners of imagery formation in my designing- but these days I deliberately like to work in that visual world that arises by drawing on both approaches. In such imagery some things are clearly bounded, others made up by the viewers mind; not by mine, but by your imagination.
